Addax nasomaculatus
Weight: 135 kg.
Habitat: Sandy and stony regions of the Sahara Desert, particularly
dune regions. It can survive in waterless areas.
Age to maturity: Females: 18months; Males: less than three
years.
Gestation Period: 257-264 days.
Birth season: September to January (autumn to winter).
Birth rate: 1/year.
Maximum Age: At least 25 years.
Diet: Prefers to graze on coarse desert grasses. When grasses
are absent it browses acacia species and leguminous herbs.
Threats:
Motorized hunting with modern weapons by indigenous people for meat and
leather. The expansion of pastoral agriculture has also been a factor.
